Pentecost, often referred to as the birthday of the Church, is commemorated each moment when the Holy Spirit impels us to transcend any boundaries that prevent us from living and proclaiming the Kingdom of God. The first reading reminds us that we do not all hear or know God in the same way since “we hear them speaking in our own tongues.” (Acts 2:11) Pentecost celebrates the diversity of God and thus the diversity of all created in the image of God.

Saint Paul teaches that we are all given different gifts, all of which are necessary to bring about the Kingdom of God. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord.” (1…
