Although we celebrate this day as a solemnity … we don’t know very much about St. Joseph. What we do know … is what scripture tells us. Joseph was visited several times by angels in his dreams … and he was given instructions on what God wanted him to do.

While this was perplexing … he accepted the mystery of God’s plan for his life … and his responses demonstrated his strong faith in God.

Joseph was always there. Whether he heard the news of his betrothed being with child … or taking Mary to Bethlehem … or following the direction to escape Herod’s slaying of male children by fleeing to Egypt … or searching frantically for Jesus who was lost in the Temple … Joseph played a crucial role in Jesus’ life.

Together … Mary’s “yes” and Joseph’s “yes” of faith … changed the world! Joseph is an example of loving care. His humility … and obedience to God’s Will are examples for all of us.

Just like God had a plan for Joseph … God has a plan for each one of us. Our response matters!

We don’t know where our “yes” might lead.

May we have the grace to respond to God’s call like Joseph did … with great faith … love and humility.
