The Academic Awards Evening held Wednesday, October 8, was a wonderful night of celebration and appreciation for all of the hard work that has been done, and is being done, in Holy Name of Mary College School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
Emily Gariepy received the Felician Sisters’ Holy Name of Mary Community Service Award, a $500 scholarship for the current school year. The Directors of the Felician Sisters of St. Francis of Canada established the award in 2010 to honor a student who has given outstanding service to the school. The award money is to be used toward tuition.
The evening also recognized the achievements of five Award of Excellence winners as well as six students who received their Duke of Edinburgh pins during the 2013-2014 academic year. Conceived by his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956 and started in Canada in 1963, the program aims to help young persons develop strength of character, leadership and personal discipline through four sectors of activity: community service, sports activities, skills and expedition.
A very special award recipient was Gemma Denham-Walwyn who received the Katie Bride Spirit of the School Award that is sponsored by the HNMCS Alumnae. The award honors someone who makes a unique and significant contribution to the school that will be felt long after they leave, continuing the legacy of Kate Bride.
