Welcome Neighbors

The feast of the Epiphany on January 5, provided the opportunity for the sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Convent in Coraopolis, PA, to welcome their neighbors and Sunday Mass attendees to the traditional Epiphany gathering following the 9 a.m. Mass.  Families and friends of the sisters gathered in the beautifully decorated Founders Hall to share Sunday brunch with the sisters. S Barbara Marie Szymkowiak, local minister, welcomed the guests in the same spirit that the Holy Family welcomed the Magi on the first Epiphany, and asked all to join in the grace before meals.

The guests enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Sandy Dorn, Dolly Drost and Sue Day-McWilliams, of Aladdin Food Service. According to SM Cabrini Procopio, the food service staff always make these events very special with their presentation of a variety of foods that give the guests multiple options to satisfy all tastes.  Sister Cabrini introduced the guests to the traditional house blessing accompanying this feast. Guests were provided with copies as well as an explanation of this custom and a piece of blessed chalk to mark their door frames–20 + C+M+B+ 14–and encouraged to use the blessing in their own homes.

Two long-time friends, Tom and Francis Maxin, recalled their younger days when they served daily Mass at the convent; Lisa and Gary Canton spoke of how they are spiritually uplifted when attending Mass in the chapel, while Pat Soisson recalled her Felician teachers and inquired about them. Sister Cabrini said, “An enjoyable time was had by all.”

The evening found some sisters participating in the Community Epiphany Concert held at St. Margaret Mary Church in Moon Township. Sponsored by the West Hills Ministerium Association, the program included scripture readings and choral selections performed by the St. Margaret Mary Adult and Children’s Choirs, the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Honors Chorus, Robert E. Harper Men’s Chorus, and the Coraopolis United Methodist Church Choir.

SM Justice Przybocki, SM Faith Balawejder and SM Rene Procopio were proclaimers of the Word. SM Leona Bzura, SM Alexander Klawinski, S Josephine Maria Kaczor, SM Cabrini Procopio and SM Thaddea Meyers were on hand to experience the prayerful event.
