The sisters of the generalate community in Rome, Italy, were delighted to have special seating in the front of Saint Peter’s Basilica for the episcopal ordination of their former chaplain now Archbishop Michael Wallace Banach, a priest of the Worcester, MA, diocese, on Saturday, April 29.
According to S Melanie Marie Bajorek, the sisters also enjoyed a small reception in Paul VI Hall where they greeted Archbishop Banach after the ceremony celebrated by the Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
A few days later, His Excellency returned to Casaletto, this time with his parents and brother, and celebrated Mass once again in the generalate chapel.
Sister Melanie said, “Our present chaplains, Monsignor Joseph Punderson and Monsignor Peter Smutelovic, along with good friend Monsignor William Millea concelebrated the festive liturgy. All participated in a delicious brunch in the dining room afterwards. The Archbishop was very happy to be back with the sisters and was grateful to be able to bring his parents to see the place that they heard so much about while their son served as chaplain.”
Archbishop Banach is the Apostolic Nuncio in Papua, New Guinea, and will arrive there at the end of this month. Sister Melanie said the new archbishop “promised to keep us in prayer and asks for our prayers for him in this new mission.”
